Health effects

Since publication of the previous guideline, several new studies have looked at the relationship between TCE and cancer effects. Animal studies have shown links to kidney and testicular tumours in rats and pulmonary and liver tumours in mice. Based on the evidence gathered from both animal and human studies, TCE has been classified as probably carcinogenic to humans. Research is on-going in this area.

Animal and human studies have shown a small increase in the rate of reproductive effects (heart malformations in fetus) above what can be expected under normal circumstances. The data from the human studies came from people who had been exposed to very high levels of TCE and other solvents through contaminated groundwater. Further studies are required to confirm these developmental effects as well as their long term significance to human health.

Chlorine‚ Cancer And Heart Disease

The addition of chlorine to our drinking water began in the late 1800s and by 1904 was the standard in water treatment‚ and for the most part remains so today.

We don‘t use chlorine because it‘s the safest or even the most effective means of disinfection‚ we use it because it is the cheapest. In spite of all our technological advances‚ we essentially still pour bleach into our water before we drink it. The long-term effects of using chlorinated water have just recently been documented.

It is not uncommon to find more chlorine in tap water than is recommended safe for your swimming pool. A simple chlorine test kit from your local discount department store‚ around 6.00‚ will typically yield surprising results‚ try it!

According to the U.S. Council of Environmental Quality‚ "Cancer risk among people drinking chlorinated water is as much as 93% higher than among those whose water does not contain chlorine."

There is a lot of well-founded concern about chlorine. When chlorine is added to our water‚ it combines with other natural compounds to form Trihalomethanes (chlorination by-products)‚ or THMs. These chlorine by-products trigger the production of free radicals in the body‚ causing cell damage‚ and are highly carcinogenic. Chlorine is also suspected to contribute to hardening of the arteries‚ the primary cause of heart disease.

No one will argue that chlorine serves an important purpose‚ and that it is likely here to stay. The result of not using chlorine in our water would be outbreaks of water borne disease like typhoid and cholera‚ like existed in the 1800s.

It is also clear and experts agree... that chlorine represents a very real and serious threat to our health and should be removed both from the water we drink and the water we shower with.

A high quality water filter system together with a dechlorinating shower filter can easily and affordably take the risks of chlorine out of your water‚ at the point of use... just prior to consumption.

HYDRATION

Optimal water intake is vital to performance of human beings for a variety of functions from cognitive to cardiovascular.  If you wait until you are thirsty to drink, you are already dehydrated and these functions are already compromised.  This is why regular water intake is vital to performance both in exercise and in everyday tasks

I used to tell people that the body, at rest, could absorb water at a rate of about 1 litre per hour.  This was a mistake because I would occasionally have clients drinking large volumes of water every hour being unable to absorb it and become very uncomfortable (sloshy tummy).  I should have expressed it in smaller units of time and volume or 16 ml ½ oz. Per min. This would indicate more appropriately how you could best stay well hydrated.  That is, drink small sips of cool water frequently throughout the day.  However this activity is complicated by activity and heat.

As we exercise, or heat up because of the weather, our rate of absorption decreases dramatically.  Therefore, if you begin an activity or sporting event dehydrated or get dehydrated on a hot day, it is very difficult to re-hydrate yourself until you cool off.  This is because you cannot absorb the water as fast as you are losing it to sweat.

It is therefore very important to practice frequently drinking small amounts of cool water throughout the day, especially in hot weather.
